Reporters learned from the Anhui Provincial Energy Bureau and State Grid Anhui Electric Power that at 12:45 on August 4, Anhui’s peak power load broke the historical record once again after hitting a record high on August 3, reaching 69.99 million kilowatts, up 2.1% year on year.
Cao Youxia, Deputy Director of the Load Management Department of State Grid Anhui Marketing Service Center, analyzed that monitored power load data showed a "double-peak" trend over the past two days. Industrial consumption accounted for the largest share of total power use at noon. During the evening peak, residential electricity use made up over 40% of the load and became the major power consumer, reflecting the staggered power consumption between industrial production and residential daily use.
The surge in power consumption is driven by both robust economic growth and the recent heatwave. In the first half of this year, electricity sales of State Grid Anhui Electric Power rose 5.97% year on year, with the growth rate 4.88 percentage points higher than that of the same period last year.
Emerging business forms represented by battery charging and swapping services as well as computing power centers maintained rapid growth. The growth rate of power consumption from computing hubs has hit record highs for six consecutive months, which strongly demonstrates Anhui’s vigorous progress in green and low-carbon transition and booming digital economy. Frequent high temperatures recently have triggered massive electricity use for air conditioning cooling, serving as the immediate cause for repeated record power loads.
Faced with the dual challenges of soaring power load and rapidly expanding installed capacity of new energy, State Grid Anhui Electric Power carried out refined demand-side management. It rolled out proactive measures including staggered production and power conservation to maximize the absorption of renewable energy and guarantee safe and stable operation of the power grid.
To secure power supply from other provinces, the company arranged 2 million kilowatts of incoming power via the Baohe HVDC transmission line, an additional 800,000 kilowatts through the Jiquan HVDC line, and 500,000 kilowatts from the Anhui-Jiangsu medium-and-long-term power deal to meet evening peak demand in summer. It keeps close track of inter-provincial power supply and demand, optimizes power purchasing plans scientifically, and actively obtains medium-long-term and temporary power support via market-based transactions.
Besides, industrial and commercial consumers are encouraged to use more electricity when new energy generation peaks. The maximum valley-filling load reached 3.3639 million kilowatts, helping consume 86.6632 million kilowatt-hours of electricity generated from renewable energy.
