Recently, State Grid Shitai County Power Supply Company has launched a pilot project for integrated pole‑mounted charging piles in Xianyu Town. Leveraging existing utility poles, the company has rolled out an innovative “charge‑on‑pole” model. This initiative effectively addresses charging difficulties for new‑energy vehicles in mountainous areas, fills gaps in the county‑wide charging network, and supports the high‑quality green development of Shitai’s all‑for‑one eco‑tourism.

Boasting vast mountainous terrain, Shitai County sees rising tourist flows in mountain‑township destinations such as Xianyu and Dayan. The number of new‑energy vehicles for self‑driving mountain trips keeps growing year by year. Constrained by mountain landforms and land‑use availability, conventional charging stations are mostly confined to market towns and core scenic spots. Charging blind spots persist along mountain tourist routes. Issues including insufficient charging access and range anxiety peak during holidays, holding back rural tourism growth.

Traditional charging station construction faces hurdles including difficult land acquisition, heavy engineering work, long construction cycles and high costs, making it ill‑suited to scattered charging demands across mountain regions. To tackle this challenge, State Grid Shitai County Power Supply Company has adopted an innovative construction approach by making full use of existing power poles. Charging equipment is directly fitted onto original utility poles, requiring no land acquisition or large‑scale excavation. The solution features simple construction procedures and fast on‑site deployment.
According to sources, a total of 28 integrated pole‑mounted charging piles are planned across the county. Tailored to mountain tourist routes, the current pilot installs 40‑kW medium‑speed chargers at five key road sections. Covering high‑traffic zones including scenic roads and homestay clusters, these facilities substantially shore up mountain‑area charging services.
“Traditional charging‑station building in mountains meets great resistance and high costs. The integrated pole‑mounted model completely reshapes conventional station‑building practices. The installation cost for a single unit has been cut by over 60 percent‑‑efficient and cost‑effective,” said Ding Xudong, Director of Xianyu Central Power Supply Station of Shitai County.
“I used to fear running out of power heading into the mountains. With no chargers along the way, every drive felt worrisome. Now chargers sit right by the roadside for stop‑and‑charge convenience, making trips far more reassuring,” remarked Zhou Qinghong, a tourist from Jiangsu Province who frequently takes self‑driving tours to Xianyu Town. The newly‑added pole‑mounted chargers have fully resolved range‑related headaches for EV drivers venturing into the mountains.
