【AICC Original Article】The Charm of Huangmei Opera Resonates in Luzhou
Bathed in the vernal glow and resonant with melodic charm, the air was filled with the enchanting strains of traditional Chinese opera. On the 28th of February (the 12th day of the first lunar month), the Chenghuangmiao in Hefei was adorned with colorful lanterns and bunting, exuding a warm and festive atmosphere. The 32nd Hefei Spring Festival Temple Fair featured a special performance of Huangmei Opera, "The Charm of Huangmei," where celebrated local traditional Chinese opera artists and outstanding young performers took to the stage together. With their mellifluous vocals and graceful movements, they presented the citizens and tourists with a rich traditional Chinese opera feast imbued with local flavors, festive spirit, and profound cultural heritage.
The performance commenced with a vigorous and rhythmic drum opening, "Spring in the Pear Garden." The resounding drumbeats echoed through the courtyard, and the cheerful melodies instantly ignited the atmosphere of the venue. The audience below the stage halted their steps, and applause and cheers reverberated one after another.
Subsequently, a repertoire of classic operas took the stage one after another. As the opening notes of the renowned aria "A Pair of Birds on the Tree" from "Tian Xian Pei" (Marriage of the Fairy Princess) filled the air, it evoked nostalgic memories across generations. The actors, through their meticulous performance, vividly portrayed the sincere affection between Dong Yong and the Seventh Fairy. Each piece was presented with unique artistry: the witty and lively "Da Zhu Cao" (Gathering Grass), the joyous and bustling "Fu Qi Guan Deng" (A Couple Appreciating the Lanterns), the resolute and intelligent "Nv Fuma" (Female Consort Prince), and the tender and melodious "Lan Qiao Hui" (The Meeting at Orchid Bridge). The authentic singing and vivid characterizations left the audience, comprising avid traditional Chinese opera fans, utterly enchanted; many softly hummed along and nodded in appreciation.
In addition to the classic traditional repertoire, innovative and blended programs offered a refreshing spectacle. The Huangmei Opera songs accompanied by dance, "The Waves of Honghu Lake" and "Heavenly Maiden Scatters Flowers," ingeniously combined traditional Huangmei Opera vocals with modern stage artistry and dance aesthetics. The performers' graceful movements and flowing costumes showcased the innovative vitality and contemporary charm of this traditional Chinese opera form.
As a signature cultural event for Hefei's Spring Festival, this year's temple fair will continue until the 15th day of the first lunar month. Through a diverse array of activities, including traditional Chinese opera performances, intangible cultural heritage displays, and folk interactive experiences, it aims to enrich the cultural life of the public during the holiday, inherit and promote China's excellent traditional culture, fostering a harmonious blend of Hefei's festive spirit and its cultural heritage.
