On May 9th, within the Zhongqiao area of Jingxian County, the core area of the Yangtze Alligator National Nature Reserve in Anhui Province, the wild Yangtze alligators are sunbathing.

On the night of May 8th, investigators conducted patrols in the Changle area in Jishan Town and Yijiang Town within Nanling County.

"Last year, an adult Yangtze alligator crawled onto the road, blocking the vehicles. The people immediately called me. The local community of the nature reserve has taken the responsibility of protecting the Yangtze alligator seriously." On May 9th, Wang Yonghua, an ecological patrol officer, told the staff conducting the Yangtze alligator field population survey in Changle District located within the Jishan and Yijiang towns in Nanling County, Wuhu City.

In order to fully grasp the population dynamics of Yangtze alligators in the wild, the field survey of Yangtze alligators in 2023 jointly conducted by the Anhui Yangtze Alligator National Nature Reserve Administration and the School of Life Sciences at Anhui Normal University was launched on May 8. The survey is divided into two phases. The first phase is from May 8 to May 12, and the second phase is from May 13 to May 15. A "carpet-style" survey will be conducted on the habitat of Yangtze alligators and ponds where wild Yangtze alligators may exist in five counties (cities, districts), including Xuancheng's Xuancheng District, Langxi County, Guangde County, Jingxian County, and Nanling County.

"May and June of each year are the mating season of Yangtze alligators, during which it is easier to spot them," Professor Yan Peng from the School of Life Sciences at Anhui Normal University told reporters. Since the 1980s, ten Yangtze alligator surveys have been conducted. This is a comprehensive survey of wild Yangtze alligator resources after 2021 and 2022.
